In this EZX, drummer Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth) and engineer Chris Rakestraw (Megadeth, Deftones, Parkway Drive) have teamed up to bring you the epitome of a metal expansion for EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3. It features three unique kits, a wealth of snare drums and kicks as well as over 30 cymbals \u2013 all flawlessly captured in one of the world\u2019s most famed studios for hard rock and metal: Studio A at One On One in Los Angeles. Massive-sounding, warm and vibrant but at the same time just as tight and aggressive, this room has all the qualities to move air in a way that makes it seem custom-built particularly for hard-hitting metal drums. This goes to show on the plethora of defining records that were recorded here, some of which include the likes of Megadeth\u2019s \u201cRust in Peace,\u201d Metallica\u2019s \u201c\u2026And Justice for All\u201d and \u201cBlack Album,\u201d Dream Theater\u2019s \u201cAwake\u201d and Testament\u2019s \u201cThe Ritual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each of the three drum kits included represents its own niched sound. This project has been a long time coming and, finally, we pulled it off! How was the experience?<\/strong>
\nIt sure has! Ever since creating the Library of the Extreme and Metal Beats MIDI packs for Toontrack, I\u2019ve dreamed of sampling my own kits for an EZX. It took over a decade to make it happen, but we did it!\u2028I knew I\u2019d be in the best of hands with my friend, the uber-talented Chris Rakestraw, at the helm. Still, part of me was wondering if I\u2019d be able to stay focused during such an unusual session. I actually found that delving deep into the sound of each drum and cymbal was a soothing, almost trance-like experience. Toontrack\u2019s Norman Garschke was amazing to work with. He and Chris made everything easy and fun. I didn\u2019t get to play any blast beats but I very much did have a blast!\n <\/p>\n
Why was the One On One room the perfect choice for this session?<\/strong>
\n Chris and I wanted to make Metal Mania EZX the ultimate metal drum sample pack. To do that, we needed a studio rooted in metal. Toontrack has already recorded sample packs in many of the best studios across the globe, and we wanted to avoid a repeat, so our search was pretty intense. When I suddenly found out that after many years of absence, One On One was back in action, I could hardly believe it! I mean, \u201cRust in Peace\u201d was partly created there \u2013 Megadeth\u2019s breakthrough record and a metal classic. What could possibly be a better place? The redesigned One On One turned out to be ideal in many ways. The owners, Steve Fisher and Mathias Sorum, couldn\u2019t have been more helpful and accommodating. As for the drum tones, I think the result speaks for itself!<\/p>\n
When it came down to selecting the kits and cymbals, what was your overall thought?<\/strong>
\nI wanted this EZX to represent my journey so far as a drummer. The main focus had to be my signature kit that I currently use with Megadeth, of course! We sampled it in two different configurations: one the way I play it live and in the studio, and the other with coated Evans Drumheads for more damped tones. Next, there was the kit which I used for most of my time in Soilwork. It\u2019s a pretty different setup from the other one, with the 4×14\u2033 piccolo snare, two kicks with different depths, and Meinl Mb20 cymbals. Lastly, the kit with walnut shells made sense by adding a very distinct and warm sound to the pack. We tracked no less than 11 snare drums, including a signature piccolo owned by my friend and huge drumming influence, the late and great Sean Reinert (RIP). Sam Gample at Tama really came through in sorting out tons of gear for us, as did Chris Brewer at Meinl Cymbals and Aaron Vishria at Evans. Huge thanks to them! If anyone is wondering, I played a Starclassic Maple kit in my later years with Scarve, so that part of my drumming history hasn\u2019t been left out.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

To you, what defines a great drum sound?<\/strong>
\n You can usually tell when a drummer truly feels the music they\u2019re playing. Good tuning obviously makes a world of difference. Our drum tech for this session, Dave Vanderlinde, did an incredible job at making these kits sing. Whoever is capturing the sound should ideally be somewhat familiar with the drummer\u2019s style and sound. Chris Rakestraw recorded my drums for the latest Megadeth album and spent years on the road with us. And he really understands drums, which is why he was the perfect man for this job. In the end, the drummer makes the sound. I try to find a kit\u2019s sweet spot and play in a dynamic, balanced and consistent manner.<\/p>\n
Listening back to the finished result, what are your thoughts? And how will you be utilizing the sounds on your end?<\/strong>
\n Honestly, I\u2019m blown away sitting at my Roland e-kit hearing the exact sound of my acoustic kits! Everything feels natural and reacts just the right way. It\u2019s quite unreal. I know these kits inside and out and I feel very privileged and lucky to have them \u201cin a box.\u201d Chris\u2019 presets are brilliant and tons of fun to experiment with. So yeah, the Metal Mania EZX couldn\u2019t have turned out any better, if you ask me! I\u2019ll be using it to record demos for the next Megadeth album, which we\u2019re going to start working on soon, and for some other projects as well\u2026 Stay tuned!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

To rewind to the very beginning, how and when did you discover you had an interest for music and recording?<\/strong>
\n Early on, in my high school days, my friend Mitch Marlowe had a cool little four-track machine, and he would record bands. At that time, I had no idea about anything related to recording. I just wanted to slap the bass, and rock, haha! After being in a couple of bands back in NC, I moved to San Diego. It was in San Diego where I decided to take a community college course about recording. That only really consisted of MIDI, keyboards and sequencing. But, I was good at it, so I made the decision to continue the recording path and see where it would lead me. Fast forward and I ended up cutting my teeth at a couple studios in Hollywood, \u2013 and it was all downhill from there. Haha!\n <\/p>\n
How did you first cross paths with Dirk?<\/strong>
\n The way I remember it, I met Dirk through his wife Hannah (the famous rock photographer). I had needed a guy to come play drums on some Danzig stuff, so knowing Dirk was a drummer, I hit him up. Dirk showed up to East West Studio 2 \u2013 and killed it \u2013 and we just hit it off. A guy like that, who’s beyond professional and easy to work with, of course you’re going to end up being long-term homies! I had no idea that a few years later, I’d be working with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, and that sooner or later, Dirk would be sitting at the drum set again.<\/p>\n
What was your overall aim with the sounds and the project on a whole?<\/strong>
\n I wanted to capture an EZX that was fundamentally useful to producers and engineers, but also accessible to the bedroom musicians. What that really means is that I wanted to capture quality<\/em> instruments (mostly Tama and Meinl \u2013 tuned by the great tech Dave Vanderlinde), struck properly<\/em> (Dirk), with great mics<\/em> (Austrian Audio, Shure, Neutrik, Sennheiser), in a great room<\/em> (One On One, Studio A). I barely used any EQ over the entire session full of mics. I think maybe I rolled a little low end of the hat mics, but that’s it. The point is, this sample pack will respond well to EQ and post processing by the user because the phase hasn’t been jerked around by a bunch of on-the-spot EQ decisions during recording. Over years of mixing other artists\u2019 records, it’s sometimes tough to chase a tone when other tonal decisions have already been recorded to tape. With this pack, you get a blank slate, which I think is reflected by my range of presets.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
\n
To you, what defines a great drum sound?<\/strong>
\n I think that a great drum sound supports the genre\/music properly. If you’re a mid tempo artist, you might love a big boomy kick, and a snare that isn’t so bright that it fights the singer. Or, if you’re an extreme metal act, you may want every drum to sound hard like a brick of steel. Just depends, but with that in mind, from a fundamental mindset, ideally as much in phase as you can be from the engineering standpoint and nothing. I think when I listen to a record that has a “great drum sound,\u201d I just hear proper ambience (Foo Fighters), or lack of (Prince). When I was making the presets for this pack, I was imagining their use in a type of band\/song. So it just keeps coming back to what serves the song and genre.<\/p>\n
Having had the chance to work with the sounds when making presets and really digging into the product, what are your thoughts?<\/strong>
\n These samples turned out so killer! Toontrack is just amazing at taking hours of recorded work and translating the dynamics to this software. The sounds are just as I expected, they receive EQ\/compression well since they weren’t over processed during recording. I was especially surprised at how well the cymbals turned out. I used a set of Manley Reference mics that weren’t in any typical placement that you might expect. My decision to use Sennheiser E 602 II mics on the outside kick turned out well also. At the time of recording, I was nervous about not using a condenser mic, but you can treat this outside kick mic however you want and still get a killer, boomy woof when needed. I think I’ll be using this technique in the future as well. The Austrian-Audio OC7’s and OC818’s on the toms were killer too! You’ll notice over most of my presets, the amount of tom processing\/eq isn’t that heavy. This was simply because those mics just sounded correct to me. One other thing I discovered about Toontrack products is the ability to create macro knobs for settings that you want to control. This blew my mind and opened up a can of creative worms! You can control multiple parameters across multiple mics with a single knob which you get to dictate the ranges…it’s just amazing. Toontrack really is the premier drum sample library company.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Located in the North Hollywood district right off the bustling Lankershim Boulevard, the iconic One On One Recording Studios has been a Los Angeles go-to for hard rock and metal bands since day one. The included MIDI library was performed by Dirk Verbeuren and inspired by songs, playing styles and grooves closely knit to his discography. Expect a fundamental collection of drum MIDI material featuring a wealth of variations on thrash and blast beats as well as double bass drum and all-around pummeling grooves. To top it off, all the wild fills you can imagine! In addition to each song being organized in parts that you can drag and drop to build your own renditions from, a full take of each as played by Dirk is included. The best of both worlds!<\/strong><\/p>\n
